CCUS essential for O&G transition to net zero
REALISE CCUS coordinator Dr Inna Kim and team member Dr Romain Viguier have highlighted the importance of carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) for the oil and gas sector’s transition to net zero in an online discussion and follow-up article by Power Engineering International.
As well as discussing the overall trajectory of CCUS, Dr Kim had the opportunity to present REALISE and its main activities and objectives. Among other things, she noted the importance of engaging with local communities and stakeholders and of understanding the social and political environment when planning CCUS projects.
In the 60-minute online discussion moderated by PEI’s editor-in-chief Kelvin Ross, our researchers were joined by Martin Towns, senior advisor for CCUS at BP, and by Mahesh Radhakrishnan, industry analyst at consultancy Frost & Sullivan.
Dr Viguier, business development manager at Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS), also discussed STRATEGY CCUS, another Horizon 2020 project in which he is involved. In his presentation, Dr Viguier discussed developing CCS/CCUS in clusters as a cost-effective, practical way of accelerating the technologies’ deployment; opportunities to share infrastructure are among the advantages.
The panel noted that North America was the most advanced region in terms of CCS/CCUS deployment but said they were encouraged by growing interest in Europe, in particular, and also in Asia.
